Rescued from political violence, Kenya

Winnie is 13 years old and comes from the Rift Valley province in Kenya.  In 2007, after disputed elections, violence erupted across the country leading to an estimated 1,000 deaths and 260,000 people uprooted.  This is Winnie’s story in her own words of how her mother was murdered and of her search for safety.

Mary was just 8 years old when staff at Hope Community Centre in Naivasha, Kenya, found her living by herself on the streets. Today she loves going to school and hopes to become a nurse when she is older.


Specialist care for disabled children in Romania

7 year old Desiree lives in a small village just outside Curtea de Arges in central Romania and is one of 60 children currently attending Hand Rom, a WER-supported school which provides care and education for children who have a range of disabilities including cerebral palsy, polio and muscular dystrophy.
