Chickens Run!

The Asics British 10K London Run was dominated by a blaze of yellow as the WER runners donned chicken costumes for the race.  7 chickens and one egg completed the 10k and were in high spirits throughout.

On the walk to the line, and while waiting to start, the chickens and egg received lots of attention from fellow runners.  Surprisingly there were very few other costume runners taking part in the event which helped WER to stand out even more.

During the wait for the start the sun came out.  While this was surely welcome to spectators, it was less so for those inside the costumes.  After what seemed like forever the team finally reached the start line and began. After a quick salute as the team passed the horse-guards they were under way.

For the start of the race the team stuck in close formation, wings out and clucking all the way.

Spectators and fellow runners alike were very encouraging when they saw the costumes.  There were lots of shouts and cheers for the chickens.  The egg seemed to get less attention, perhaps because of the colours.  Next time the egg might benefit from some go-faster stripes or extra bright yoke!

The team stayed running close together for the first 6km but soon after we began to break up as the heat took its toll.  By 8km the team had broken up with a long line of chickens striving for the finish line and the egg far ahead.  First across the line for WER was Alex Alder in the egg costume, followed shortly after by the first chicken, Alex Wilke.  The last chicken to flap back to the roost was WER's own Marketing and Communications Manager, Ben Carter, who has pledged to train much harder for the next event.

Thank you to all the runners who took part.

The next team WER race is the Great South Run on the 25th October.  You must be registered before the 30th August to take part. click here to learn more about WER events and to register for a place.
