WER would like to send a huge THANK YOU to all Team WER runners for their fantastic achievement in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon on Sunday 12th October 2008. 55 runners took up the challenge of running 13.1 miles through London’s Royal Parks to raise money for WER’s life-saving work around the world.
Commenting on the event, Therese Whitcomb-Eriksson, WER Donor Development Manager, said:
‘The enthusiasm and dedication of the Team WER runners has just been amazing! For many of our runners, this was their first half marathon but everybody entered fully into the spirit of the event and successfully completed the course. The team has helped raise thousands of pounds in sponsorship for WER’s work. They should feel really delighted with their achievement – we certainly are!”
The money raised by Team WER runners will be used to support children affected by poverty in over 15 countries across the world. As the price of food and basic commodities continues to rise around the world, many poor families and communities are being gravely affected as the cost of food soars beyond their reach.
Alex Haxton, WER Director of Operations, added:
“The support from Team WER runners and their sponsors could not have come at a more crucial time for WER and for the organisations with whom we work around the world. Now, more than ever, is the time for us to reach out to poor communities around the world. While we all feel the economic pinch here in the UK, in developing countries the soaring price of food is bringing an even greater number of children and vulnerable people to the very brink of starvation. The sponsorship raised by Team WER runners is literally saving lives right now. Their support has been tremendous!”
Also running was WER's very own 'Good Egg' (aka WER Programme Manager Jeremy Horner) who ran the course in costume in support of WER's Be a Good Egg campaign. Needless to say, he scrambled across the finish line in record time!
