In partnership with a local charity New Life Lviv, WER is reaching out to 80 children who are serving prison sentences at a detention centre in the town of Horoduk. The children are aged between 10 and 14 years and most of them were previously struggling to survive on the streets of Ukraine's cities or have come from disadvantaged and troubled home backgrounds.
Many of these children have been sentenced for up to three years for crimes including stealing food. Some of the children have been detained for more serious crimes such as violence and even murder.
The conditions of the detention centre are very basic and WER is helping to improve the facility. WER is funding materials for education and leisure activities as well as helping to provide clothing and food for the children.
WER is committed to giving these children a living chance so that they can gain skills to enable rehabilitation and a fresh start for the future.
