The Be a Good Egg campaign has been thriving up and down the country with primary and secondary schools, local supermarkets, shops and churches all raising money this Harvest time.
The campaign invites young people to raise money with the help of friends and family and other members of the community using specially designed egg-pack collection boxes. The money raised is used to set up chicken farms in some of the poorest countries in the world.
For around £6.00 WER can purchase a laying hen that will lay up to 150 eggs per year. The eggs can be eaten or they can be sold or traded, providing an income for families living in difficult circumstances. A simple start-up includes several hens, feed and inoculations so that the farm will quickly provide a reliable supply of food and income. Best of all, chickens are easy to look after, so there is still time for school and other activities.
The money raised from the Be a Good Egg campaign can also fund larger-scale chicken farms, each with hundreds of laying hens, established to serve orphanages and health centres. Through these large-scale projects, enough eggs can be produced to both feed the children, and raise funds for additional livestock, agricultural equipment and even for teachers’ salaries and children’s education.
Last week, Nick Mason, WER’s Fundraising Manager, attended Harvest Festivals in Conwy, Wigan and Tenby to celebrate the wonderful efforts of young people who have raised money to help children of a similar age in poor countries around the globe. The pupils had come up with all kinds of ways to raise money including a sponsored silence, a jumble sale and a sponsored skipping competition. WER is so egg-cited about the campaign we have created a new interactive Be A Good Website! Take a look at the fundraising stories and pictures here and feel free to take part in the campaign and post your own ‘Good Egg’ story.
Already the Be a Good Egg campaign has helped to raise funds for chicken farms in Kenya, Burundi, Zambia and Romania. Thanks to the dedication of kids around the UK this Harvest time many more can now be established.
