WER, in partnership with the Kale Heywet Church, has provided funding to build two Montessori Kindergarten Schools in Basketo, a remote highland community over 600 km from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.

140 children are now benefiting from an education at the schools. The method of teaching is participatory - children learn as they play. The teaching staff have been sourced from the local community and some of the teachers have received two years training in the 'Montessori' approach to learning.

WER is currently covering the running costs of the two kindergartens in Basketo, plus a third kindergarten in the town of Kucha.

WER has also provided funding for community training in Basketo to help raise awareness of the rights of children and to encourage parents and members of the local community to exchange opinions on childcare and child growth. Issues relating to HIV/AIDS have also been addressed. This is the first time that training of this type has taken place in Basketo and is proving to be popular with parents within the community.
