Malawi is a landlocked country in south central Africa and is bordered by Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west and Mozambique to the east and south.

Agriculture is very important to the economy. Most Malawians rely on subsistence farming but recent food shortages have increased pressure on Malawi’s already slim resources. The country is also prone to natural disasters - from drought to heavy rainfalls – which put it in constant need of thousands of tons of food aid every year.

People in Malawi face a number of social problems, including poverty and the high rate of HIV/AIDS infection. Tens of thousands of Malawians die from AIDS every year and there are estimated to be more than a million orphans in the country. In fact, children under 16 make up nearly half of the population.

Known affectionately by local people as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’, Malawi's countryside is beautiful and varied, ranging from national parks and game reserves to forests and wetlands.

The most recent Human Development Report ranks Malawi at 160, with a low human development rating status. The Human Development Index (HDI) value is 0.493 compared to the HDI of the UK, which is 0.946.

WER has worked in Malawi in partnership with Strathclyde University and Glasgow the Caring City charity.
