Through Be a Good Egg funds WER has been able to set up a chicken farm for the wives and families of prisoners at Ndola prison. The farm has been funded through local partner, Prison Fellowship Zambia.

The chicken farm supports 10 families of prisoners and has been a great success, providing children with nutritious eggs and an income for the families.

There are currently 150 chickens the farm, looked after by the wives and partners of inmates.

There is some work involved, but the women are very happy to be taking part in the project.

Mrs Musonda, one of the beneficiaries, is delighted to be able to take part.

“This will help us very much especially us women, because we are directly responsible for the welfare of families, including our husbands in prison,” she said.

Each family takes 10 eggs a week to eat and the rest are sold.  Part of the money is used to buy feed and medication for the chickens but the rest is available to support the families other needs

There is a large prison population in Zambia, with many inmates serving sentences for petty crimes such as stealing bread. There is no state support for the families of prisoners, who are often shunned by the community.  This chicken farm is providing a vital source of income and self-esteem to the families involved.
