The Arba Minch Primary School was established in response to parents’ requests that better quality education be made available to their young children.
The majority of children attending the school have come from three local Montessori kindergartens. Initially eight classrooms were built to cater for 320 children, from grades 1 to 4.
Through WER’s continued support, additional classrooms have been built to increase the number of children able to attend, as well as the range of grades available. Today, over 800 pupils attend Arba Minch Primary School and the teachers are able to offer education up to grade 9.
Teachers at the primary school are encouraged to attend a local teacher training college with the aim of upgrading their skills and learning alternative classroom practices. The school also plans to set up an income generation scheme to raise funds, which will allow more children from especially poor families to enjoy the benefits of primary education.
Locally, the school is now considered to be one of the best in the region, and its pupils regularly attain the highest grades.
Working with our partner, the Kale Heywet Church, WER is committed to ensuring that young children receive the best possible start in life.
