The imprisonment of a parent can have a severe impact on the well-being of a child, particularly if this also leads to the loss of essential income provided by the family's breadwinner. In Zambia, and in many countries around the world, young children may have to live in prison with their mother and face huge challenges in confinement, not least the lack of adequate hygiene or nutritious food.
WER is working in partnership with Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ) to reach out to children who are suffering as a result of the imprisonment of a parent. This includes providing school fees and materials to enable 25 children to attend school. All of these children are from families who would otherwise be unable to afford to educate their children.
WER also provides monthly food packages to families to ensure that the children of prisoners receive nutritious food as they grow. These food packages are distributed both to families within the community who are affected by the imprisonment of a family member and also to mothers and their children living within the prison itself.
