The Monte Christo food centre, based in Paarl East, feeds over 6,000 children every day. During term time food is given out at schools through the Peninsula School Feeding programme.
Many families in the region cannot afford to feed their children a good meal once a day and often children go hungry. These school meals are essential to the children’s development.

MCM now also provides food outside of term-times through a network of local youth centres and community kitchens. Thanks to a recent donation of industrial baking equipment from WNH (the Holland brand of WER) the kitchen now has the capacity to mass produce carotino muffins alongside regular soup, rice and bean dishes.
The carotino muffins are very nutritious and provide all the nutrients a child needs for a whole day. They contain carotino oil, vitamins A and E, rich sources of iron and Zinc and are high in anti oxidants and low in fatty acids.
Children across the Paarl East and Mbekweni areas, in the Western Cape are now enjoying the muffins as part of their daily meal.
The muffins are being rolled out to MCM organisations including The Butterfly House AIDs orphanage, crèches in Mbekweni and Paarl East and for children attending sports programmes. Many of the children who attend the football coaching will turn up to matches, having had nothing to eat all day so the muffins are an ideal food to give them.
Local young people made a video of the muffin project. Watch it by clicking on the link panel above.
