The Dominican Republic is a middle-income developing country primarily dependent on agriculture, trade and services, especially tourism. Growth in tourism and the Free Trade Zones has overtaken agriculture as the leading employer of Dominicans. Tourism accounts for more than $1 billion in annual earnings. However agriculture remains an important sector in terms of domestic consumption and export earnings.

Although tourism has undoubtedly had a positive effect on the state of the economy, this has failed to benefit the majority of the population. There are many slums in the Dominican Republic where people live in poor and unhygienic conditions.

The most recent Human Development Report ranks Dominican Republic at 95, with a medium human development rating status. The Human Development Index (HDI) value is 0.749 compared to the HDI of the UK, which is 0.939.
