Decades of war have seriously damaged the economy of Afghanistan. Agriculture, both subsistence and commercial, is the main economic activity, engaging approximately 80% of the population.
Grain, rice, fruit, nuts and vegetables are the main traditional crops, all of which have been severely affected by drought in recent years. Industry remains small scale and includes handicrafts, textiles, carpets, and some food processing.
The health of the population is being undermined by poverty. Children are particularly at risk. Research indicates that one in six babies die during or shortly after birth and one in four children die before reaching the age of 5.
WER has worked in Afghanistan in partnership with Rescue Task Force and World In Need.
