Malawi is a landlocked country in south central Africa bordered by Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west and Mozambique to the east and south.

Agriculture is very important to the economy; recent food shortages have increased pressure on Malawi’s already slim resources. The majority of the population live in the countryside and children under 16 make up nearly half of the population. HIV/AIDS is a growing threat to the social development of Malawi as it continues to stunt the productive work force.

The most recent Human Development Report ranks Malawi at 165, with a low human development rating status. The Human Development Index (HDI) value is 0.404 compared to the HDI of the UK, which is 0.939.

WER works in Malawi in partnership with Strathclyde University and Glasgow the Caring City charity.

Gorodi Road construction - Livingstonia

Gorodi Road was originally built in 1905 to the Livingston Mission Station which was situated on a plateau overlooking Lake Malawi. Over the years this road has deteriorated and access to the David Gordon Hospital and local secondary and technical schools has become more difficult.
