Shipment of hospital beds arrives in Ethiopia
WER has shipped three 40ft containers of hospital beds to Ethiopia for distribution to rural medical centres and hospitals in the Tigray region of the country.
The beds were donated by Sheffied Health Trust and transported from Sheffield to Ethiopia by WER.
Ethiopia contains one of the largest concentrations of poor people on the planet and ranks 170 out of 177 countries in the United Nations Human Development Report. Life expectancy is 48 years (UNICEF, 2004), under-five mortality is 123 per 1000 live births, and an estimated 41.4% of the adult population are living with HIV/AIDS (Demographic and Health Survey 2005).
As well as providing humanitarian and development aid to Ethiopia, WER works in partnership with Kale Heywet Church to support education and teacher training programmes in some of the country’s more remote highland communities.
