Humanitarian crisis in northern Uganda

For more than 18 years, a rebel group, known as the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has been terrorising northern Uganda, causing suffering and mass displacement to millions of people. Yet this humanitarian crisis continues to miss the headlines and to be overshadowed by other ‘emergency’ news.

Continuing violence in the Darfur region of western Sudan has forced over 1 million people from their homes and into camps where deteriorating conditions continue to threaten their survival.



Disability in developing countries

There are nearly 500 million disabled people in the world. 80 percent of them are living in developing countries. With inadequate, or non-existent, support structures, they are regularly shunned by their societies and are often prevented from attending school or from finding work. This means that, of the 1.3 billion people around the world who struggle to live on less than $1 a day, disabled people tend to be the poorest of the poor.
