The detention centre is based in Horoduk and caters for up to 80 children aged between 10 and 14 years, most of whom are street children or from troubled home backgrounds. Many of these children have been sentenced for up to three years for such things as stealing food and other ‘petty’ crimes. Other children are in the centre for more serious crimes such as violence and even murder.
The conditions of the detention centre are very basic and WER is helping to improve the facility. WER is funding materials for education and leisure activities as well as helping to provide clothing and food.
WER is giving children a hope for the future and giving many a chance to develop so they can gain skills to enable rehabilitation and a fresh start.
