WER, in partnership with the Kale Heywet Church, provided funding to build a Montessori Kindergarten School in Basketo, a remote highland community over 600 km from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.
140 children are now benefiting from an education at the school. The method of teaching is participatory - children learn as they play. The four teaching staff have been sourced from the local community and two of the teachers have received two years training in the 'Montessori' approach to learning.
In 2006, WER provided additional funds to construct a second kindergarten in Basketo.
WER is currently covering the running costs of the two kindergartens in Basketo, plus a third kindergarten in the town of Kucha.
