In February 2005 UNICEF reported that there were still approximately 550,000 displaced persons in Sri Lanka, of which 150,000 were living in camps. In conjunction with Shelterbox, WER helped fund the shipment of more than 2,000 10-person tents, along with sleeping bags and cooking utensils, to provide emergency relief to the thousands of families who have lost their homes.
In Pireliya, a village north of Hikkaduwa, WER funded the purchase of three concrete block making machines which local people can use to construct temporary houses. This will also enable income to be regenerated into the local economy, both in terms of salaries and product costs when the blocks are sold.
