More than 27,000 fishermen and their families were killed when the waves struck and approximately 90,000 fisherfolk families were displaced due to loss of housing and personal belongings. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their livelihood since approximately 75% of Sri Lanka’s boat fleet was damaged or destroyed by the tidal waves. The overall productivity losses have impacted more than 800,000 workers and their families.
In partnership with GtCC, WER has funded the repair of fishing boats by local people, empowering local people through the return of their livelihoods.
