In Patuwatha, a small village consisting of only ten houses to the south of Hikkaduwa, Glasgow the Caring City visited the ‘Grama Niladaric’ (village headman), Mr Pathmasiri, who advised that the greatest urgency in the village was that the children return to school. WER responded to this appeal for help by purchasing school materials, including schoolbags, books and pens, for every child in the village.
In addition to this, every household received mosquito nets and kitchen equipment, such as a kettle and pans, and basic drainage channels to prevent flooding and standing water have been designed in order to minimise disease and mosquito breeding.
